Hickey Programme

Simplified Hickey Multi-Sensory Literacy Programme

The Hickey Multi-sensory Literacy Program is one of the few research-based and internationally respected program for teaching literacy to students with Dyslexia and other significant reading disabilities or delays.

The program is recommended by the British Dyslexia Association and the International Association US. It is very effective in the long term. Many aspects of the program are a type of therapy that requires much over-learning. The structure of the program spans 89 Teaching Points that are each taught explicitly and then revised in an on-going way throughout the program.

It is a different way of learning from classroom practice. It is based on thorough teaching and practice, practice, practice on the part of the student until the knowledge becomes automatic and permanent. The student starts off learning, in depth and detail, all aspects of the single letter sounds and progresses through to more sophisticated letter combinations and sounds, syllabification and the decoding of words, spelling rules, grammar and written expression.

Everything the student is taught is put on a card and added to their personal pack. This pack, when practised regularly, aids memory and recall.

The Barton Reading Programme

The Barton Reading Program is a teaching method created for students with dyslexia. It is designed as an intensive intervention for students who struggle to easily and accurately decode words when reading (despite being taught phonics). It’s one of several reading programs that are based on the highly structured Orton–Gillingham approach. However, it’s aimed at a somewhat different audience.

Like other programs based on Orton–Gillingham, Barton is “multisensory.” It uses all the senses to help kids make connections between sounds and words. It spends more time than most programs on spelling. It also goes beyond reading basics. Barton encourages one-on-one teaching for best results. 4

Orton-Gillingham

Orton–Gillingham is a highly structured approach that introduces the idea of breaking reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds, and then building on these skills over time. It also pioneered the “ multi-sensory“ approach to teaching reading, which is considered highly effective for teaching students with dyslexia.

The Orton-Gillingham approach always is focused upon the learning needs of the individual student. Students with dyslexia need to master the same basic knowledge about language and its relationship to our writing system as any who seek to become competent readers and writers. However, because of their dyslexia, they need more help than most people in sorting, recognising, and organising the raw materials of language for thinking and use. Language elements that non-dyslexic learners acquire easily must be taught directly and systematically. 2
